Acne
Restoring skin health one patient at a time
Acne occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog hair follicles, leading to whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. While most common during adolescence, it can affect people of all ages.
The condition is often persistent; as one blemish heals, another may emerge. Because acne frequently causes emotional distress or permanent scarring, early intervention is recommended.
How Acne Develops
Acne primarily targets the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders—areas with the highest concentration of oil (sebaceous) glands.
Whiteheads: Form when a clogged follicle wall swells.
Blackheads: Occur when a plug is exposed to air, causing it to oxidize and turn dark (this is not dirt, but a chemical reaction of oil and bacteria).
Pimples: Appear as red bumps with white centers when follicles become inflamed or infected.
Cysts: Result from deep, painful blockages beneath the skin’s surface.
