Cysts
Restoring skin health one patient at a time
Cysts are abnormal, fluid-filled sacs that can develop anywhere in the body. This guide focuses on epidermoid cysts, which are slow-growing, painless bumps typically found on the face, neck, or torso.
These cysts form when surface skin cells move deeper into the skin—often due to injury or follicle irritation—rather than shedding naturally. These cells build a sac and fill it with keratin, a thick, yellowish protein. While often confused with sebaceous (oil gland) cysts, epidermoid cysts are far more common.
Most cysts are harmless and can be left alone. However, you should contact Restoration Dermatology if a cyst:
- Becomes inflamed, swollen, or painful (signs of infection or rupture).
- Grows rapidly or appears in unusual spots, like fingers or toes.
- Is constantly irritated by clothing or movement.
- Is cosmetically bothersome.
