Shingles
Restoring skin health one patient at a time
Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in nerve tissue. It can reactivate years later, typically in adults over 50 or those with weakened immune systems.
Key Symptoms
Shingles is best known for causing a painful, blistering rash that usually appears as a single stripe on one side of the torso or face.
Early Signs: Pain, burning, or tingling often occur several days before the rash appears. You may also experience fever, headache, and fatigue.
The Rash: Fluid-filled blisters form, which typically crust over in 7–10 days and clear fully within 2–4 weeks.
Atypical Cases: Some individuals experience shingles pain without ever developing a visible rash.
Transmission and Risks
Contagious Period: You cannot “catch” shingles from someone else. However, the virus can be spread to anyone who is not immune to chickenpox through direct contact with blister fluid. If infected, they will develop chickenpox, not shingles. A person is no longer contagious once all blisters have scabbed over.
Complications
Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN): The most common complication, where nerve pain persists for months or years after the rash heals.
Vision/Hearing Loss: Infections near the eyes or ears can lead to permanent damage.
Neurological Issues: In rare cases, shingles can cause brain inflammation (encephalitis) or facial paralysis.
Treatment
There is no cure, but early treatment is vital.
Antivirals: Starting medications within 72 hours of the rash appearing significantly reduces the risk of long-term pain.
