Skin Infection

Restoring skin health one patient at a time

While the skin serves as the body’s primary barrier against injury and pathogens, it remains vulnerable to infection. These infections are generally categorized by their source: bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic. Treatment depends on the infection’s cause and severity, ranging from over-the-counter (OTC) remedies to professional medical intervention.

Bacterial Infections: These typically occur when bacteria breach the epidermis through cuts, scrapes, or hair follicles. Symptoms often begin as small red bumps that expand over time. Common examples include impetigo and folliculitis, while more severe cases—such as cellulitis or antibiotic-resistant MRSA—require urgent medical care and may necessitate oral or topical antibiotics.

Viral Infections: Often caused by poxviruses, herpes viruses, or HPV, these include conditions like shingles, warts, and molluscum contagiosum. While some resolve independently, others require targeted antiviral therapy for symptom relief.

Fungal Infections: These thrive in warm, moist areas like the feet or skin folds. Examples include athlete’s foot and ringworm. While many respond to OTC antifungals, persistent cases may require prescription-strength treatment.
